Goals:
✦ Perform advanced jazz literature.
✦ Improvise as a soloist in a variety of jazz styles.
✦ Participate in concerts, festivals, and recording sessions.
✦ Demonstrate an understanding of musical concepts through listening and critiquing.
Auditions:
✦ The group is selected through auditions held in early June. See Mr. Fein for audition materials in mid-May.
✦ Auditions are held in the spring to determine ensemble placement in the following school year.
✦ All students in the HHS Jazz Ensemble MUST be registered for Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, String Orchestra, or String Ensemble.
Rehearsals:
The Jazz Ensemble rehearses twice weekly after school from November through May. Rehearsals are generally Wednesdays 2:30-4:25pm and Thursdays 7:30-9:30pm.
Performances:
The Jazz Ensemble performs regularly throughout the year at school concerts, community events, and jazz festivals. The ensemble also participates in the Essentially Ellington Festival sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center through recording submission and performance at the Temple University Regional Essentially Ellington Festival.
