The Haverford Jazz Residency Campaign (HJRC) is an innovative program that began in the 2013-2014 school year. The mission is to fund the annual visits of professional jazz musicians to the students and schools of the School District of Haverford Township. The HJRC is solely funded by the generous support of donors, many of whom are former band parents, alumni, private teachers, township residents and local businesses. All donations will go directly to this program and are tax deductible.

The HJRC marks the collaboration of Haverford Township residents Cathy Barbash and Michael Riley along with Haverford jazz staff. The Barbash-Riley family initiated the funding for this program as a thank-you for the jazz education and jazz experiences their child received while a student at Haverford Middle School and High School. The Barbash family fund generously pledged a 6-year matching funds contribution in the hope that such wonderful experiences will continue to flourish and can be shared by the ever growing jazz education community in the school district. The result of the collaboration is the educationally extraordinary and unique Haverford Jazz Residency Campaign.
The goal of the campaign is to annually fund an artist-in-residence program for the jazz students of Haverford Township. The artist-in-residence will visit the school district throughout the year, closely working with the students and directors of the music department’s five jazz ensembles, developing an educational and musical rapport with the students and directors, as they teach, inspire and perform alongside our students.
While the music department has long supported an Annual Evening of Jazz concert program each year, these concerts have typically been a one-day extravaganza. The residency program intends to bring an artist to our schools on several visits throughout the year, getting to know our students by name and developing a true student-artist relationship. The culminating event of the annual residency will be the Annual Evening of Jazz concert. Characteristics of the HJRC program:
